    Sweet Tooth Secures $2.25M in Seed Financing

    OMERS Ventures, the MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund and Points International to Invest $1.5M

    WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 7, 2012) - Sweet Tooth Inc., a Waterloo, Ontario-based developer of eCommerce customer loyalty software, has secured $2.25 million in funding. Of this, a total of $1.5 million in seed financing will come from OMERS Ventures, the Ontario government funded MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund (IAF) and Points International. An additional $750,000 is forthcoming from other sources.

    Launched in 2009, Sweet Tooth provides a turnkey, user-friendly system for merchants to create 'points' programs and deliver online and in-store rewards to their customers. Sweet Tooth has helped over 1,500 merchants actively engage and reward more than 15 million consumers worldwide.

    "As online shopping continues to grow, the Internet has become retail's new battleground for customer loyalty and retention," said Sweet Tooth founder and CEO Jay El-Kaake.     In the three years since it launched, Sweet Tooth has experienced strong growth. Collaborating with OMERS Ventures, the IAF and Points International will help expand Sweet Tooth's team and loyalty platform in order to accelerate this growth.

How the New Top Level Domains will Affect e-Commerce

  • The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) plans to release new, custom top level domains (the part that comes after the "dot"  in your .com, .org, etc). The implications of this are widespread; a brand can have their own custom domain (such as .sweettooth), an idea or movement (such as .eco), a region (such as .london)...there are too many uses to count!

    For eCommerce merchants, this means that your shoe store could be hosted on .shoes, or .buy. It will be interesting to see how the eCommerce industry will change when these new domains begin to roll out. Some are excited about this new change, while others aren't, and some are opposing it outright.

eBay/PayPal Buys Magento; What does it mean for Sweet Tooth, Better Store Search and WDCA?

  • Last week the remaining 51% of Magento was purchased by eBay (PayPal) which puts PayPal’s total ownership of Magento at 100%. This was done in a strategic attempt by PayPal to launch their x.Commerce platform.

    For us and our major partnership with Magento, it means that we will be able to play a more prominent role in the e-commerce on-line and off-line community. With Sweet Tooth at the top of Magento, the world’s largest e-commerce system with over 100,000 merchants, PayPal’s actions will enable Sweet Tooth to move towards being a world standard for e-commerce on-line and off-line rewards.

    PayPal is planning on stimulating Magento’s growth and development to improve it further and push it towards the world’s standard for e-commerce. PayPal is also planning on creating a completely multi-channel solution with their upcoming in-store payment solutions, which WDCA plans to follow completely.
